In Santorini you will admire the most spectacular sunset, the stunning view of villages on top of cliffs, the thrilling scenery of the submerged volcano. Spend the day sunbathing, swimming and live it up at night dancing and dining at a traditional restaurant.
An impressive sight is Akrotiri located in the southern region of the island. There the remains of a Minoan city were discovered in the 19th century, This historic sight is linked with the legendary Lost Atlantis. The greater part of the ancient city remains intact allowing you to travel back in antiquity, have a close look at the three-storey buildings that were covered with lava and ash following the volcanic eruption in prehistoric times.
The road to Akrotiri will take you to the furthest point of the island. There, the most spectacular lighthouse stands in fornt of your eyes. When there, you can foolow the same road back to the Red ‘Kokkini’ beach so called because of the color of its sand. Being small in size it can get quite crowded during the summer months. As you make your way down, you will be impressed by the colorful rock formation of the cliff. You can enjoy fresh fish and sea food in a local ‘taverna’ while you are there. Finally, if you do not need to walk up the cliff to get a car ride, then take a boat back to Akrotiri port.
On another day, you should visit Fira, the capital. There are plenty of great sights to stopover. Some of them include, the Megaro Gyzi Museum, the two Cathedrals, the Orthodox and the Catholic both of which are places where couples from all over the world exchange their wedding vows. In Fira you should see the Archeological and Prehistoric Museums. Yet, Fira is not only for cultural experience it is full of action, the main square Plateia Theotokopoulou is bustling with tourist from all corners of the world, the perfect place for quality shopping of clothing jewelry domestic wine and local grown food.
Oia – The most famous Sunset in Greece
At some other time of your honeymoon, a few miles away from Fira you reach the world famous village of Oia, located on top of the cliff , offers the most -tremendous view over the submerged volcano, the Palia and Nea Kameni. There you can visit the Maritime Museum as well as many of its art galleries. Three-hundred steps down, is the small port of Ammoudi, you can get a boat to take you across to the small island of Thirassia. You can go on a donkey ride on your way back up to Oia and admire the marvellous sunset sitting on a rooftop or a veranda, experiencing the most romantic moments of your trip. If you rather have a more relaxing time, spend your day at one of the best beaches of Santo to Perissa a long black sandy beach. Enjoy a swim in its crystal-clear, deep blue waters. Another similar beach is that of Kamari, also covered with black sand, with an enormous rock emerging from the sea known as Mesa Vouno making it an attractive location for sunbathers and swimmers.
Another famous, nearby beach is Monolithos. It is popular for not so keen swimmers because of its shallow waters. All three beaches are well-organized with sunbeds and umbrellas. Fans of water sports, sailing, fishing snorkeling can find what they need at the beaches which are all surrounded by various hotels and rooms, where you can stay and have a more relaxing stay on the island sunbathing, swimming, and star gazing at night. There are restaurants serving fresh fish and sea food accompanied with local wine and desserts like ‘loukouki’ ice-cream. Beach bars are open all day and night full of cheerful crowds drinking sfinakia and dancing anytime of the day.
Eating in Santorini
Eating out at any place in Santorini will not be a problem as you can find something delicious at an affordable price. You should try ‘fava’ something like pea soup served with onions and olive oil, local grown white egg plants, the most tasty cherry tomatoes served with capers. And of course drink santorini wine or tsipouro. If you do not want to try anything new there are restaurants serving international dishes. You can have the best Japanese sushi you have ever tasted or the best beef fillet.
As you realize you can spend as many days in Santorini as long as you can afford it. You will never have enough and always wish to come back for more!
